Today I insured that I would get to
swim. I told someone that I didn't plan on swimming. I guess that part
was true; I didn't plan on swimming. I was with a group of guides
which I have been training and will be working with this summer.
There were some decent sized waves (4-6 ft and 3-4 ft surf) in Au Train
Bay. I get just into the water and take a couple strokes and something
is just wrong with my paddle. It isn't working at all right; the
feather is way off. Ploop, I'm upside down basically in the sand with
my kayak on top of me, reaching for my spray skirt.
After I
dragged my kayak back to shore I grabbed my paddle and still couldn't
figure out how it had the wrong feather. It wasn't left handed. Then
after a bit of taking it apart and putting it back together and looking
at it cross-eyed, I realized that the ferrule was loose. The feather
angle was infinitely adjustable; and it had never been before. That
messes up your stroke, and your brace too!
After a bit of alignment and adding some epoxy it seems all better. We'll see what it does next time I try to use it...tomorrow.
